Capacity Planning for SAP

Since 1972 SAP has developed a huge and complex software bundle which covers nearly every company ́s business process. Today SAP is developing new technologies and strategies to support e-commerce-applications and internet portals. The current software product is called mySAP.com. The growing complexity of the software has also its negative consequences. For every new release the hardware consumptions grow as well and an upgrade usually requires an improvement of the hardware. To detect performance problems and resulting hardware upgrades it is important to monitor and analyse the workload of an SAP system. This article will describe concepts to monitor an SAP system and introduce strategies to analyse and describe the workload. Further on analytical modelling and performance forecasting using the WLPSizer tool is described. Finally three case studies are presented.
